Project Description

The Utah Transit Authority will extend the S-Line streetcar from Fairmont Station (1040 East) approximately one quarter-mile east to Highland Drive, near Simpson Avenue in Sugar House. Construction is set to begin in spring 2026 and continue into mid-2027, with the new streetcar service expected to open by late 2027.

The project will add a new station at Highland Drive and Simpson Avenue, next to the Sugar House shopping district. This extension is a key investment in sustainable transportation for the Sugar House business district, bringing the streetcar closer to shops, restaurants, new housing, and the University of Utah Sugar House Health Center.

New Elements

  • New station: A new streetcar stop at Highland Drive and Simpson Avenue will give people direct access to Sugar House businesses, restaurants, and shops.
  • Intersection upgrades: New traffic signals and improved pedestrian crossings will be added at McClelland Street, 1100 East, and Highland Drive to make the area safer and help traffic flow better near the new extension.
  • Additional streetcar vehicle: An additional streetcar vehicle will be added to the service to maintain reliable 15-minute service.

Project Goals and Benefits

  • Increase mobility and access: Provide reliable transit in Sugar House to help reduce traffic.
  • Support local growth: Make it easier for people to get to jobs, businesses, entertainment, and new developments in the area.
  • Improve connectivity: Link Sugar House to the UTA transit network, making it easier to reach TRAX, FrontRunner, and other destinations in the valley.
